AnyPS5 Setup Guide: System Requirements and What You Need

Windows and Linux, Vulkan GPU, C++ toolchain — and realistic expectations. What you need before experimenting with AnyPS5.

Thinking of experimenting with AnyPS5? Good — but go in with the right expectations and the right machine. This is a developer-grade open-source project, not a download-and-play app. Here is what you actually need.

Operating system

AnyPS5 targets Windows and Linux. The relinker produces native binaries for either one, and rendering goes through Vulkan on both. There is no macOS target — Apple's GPUs do not do Vulkan natively, and the project has no Metal backend. If you are on a Mac, this project is not for you right now.

CPU

Any modern x86-64 processor works — that is the whole point of the relinker approach, since the PS5's Zen 2 chip speaks the same instruction set. A mid-range AMD or Intel CPU from the last several years is fine for experimenting. You do not need a monster processor, because there is no CPU emulation happening.

GPU

This is the part that matters. AnyPS5 renders through Vulkan, with PS5 shaders converted to SPIR-V. You need a GPU with solid Vulkan support and recent drivers — any modern NVIDIA or AMD card qualifies. Intel integrated graphics will technically work for the simplest tests but is not a serious target. Keep your drivers current; half of all "it crashes" reports in young graphics projects are stale drivers.

Software you will need

  • A C++ toolchain — you will almost certainly be building from source. On Windows that means Visual Studio; on Linux, GCC or Clang plus CMake.
  • Git — to clone the repository and stay current, because the project moves fast.
  • Vulkan SDK — for the graphics backend.
  • Patience — the honest requirement. Build issues, missing library implementations, and crashes are the normal experience at this stage.

What you do NOT need (and should not get)

You do not need a PS5, and — critically — you do not need anyone's "game pack," "firmware bundle," or "key file." AnyPS5 ships with none of those, needs none of those from third parties, and any site offering them alongside AnyPS5 is either pirating or scamming you. The project is a tool; it contains no games. Our legality FAQ explains where the line sits.

The realistic setup path

Clone the official repository (linked from our download page), build it, and start with whatever the bring-up tracker says is closest to working. Do not start with a AAA game and expect anything but a crash log — contribute that crash log back, and you have helped the project more than a hundred "when will it run X" comments. Check what actually runs before you pick a target, and what's next to see which libraries are landing.
